Acne Skin Care

3 Simple Things I Fix First With Every Client

Fundamentals You Need To Get Right

 1    Out Of Date Products

A significantly overlooked factor in skincare is using products that are out of date — yet it’s something that can have a significant impact on the skin.

When reviewing which products my clients are using, this is something that comes up again and again.

In the studio, we’ll usually talk through what’s being used day to day.  For the clients I work closely with we will physically go through their cabinet and review their products.    In both situations, the same pattern appears.

It’s very common for products to be kept longer than they should be, especially if they’re only used occasionally.

Once opened, many products begin to lose their effectiveness over time. In some cases, they can also become more likely to irritate the skin.

This can quietly contribute to ongoing breakouts without it being obvious.

It may seem like a small detail, but it’s one that cannot be overstated — keeping your products fresh and up to date is a simple step that can make a real difference.

 â€‹2    Too Many Products

More is not better.

A very common issue with acne-prone skin is simply using too many products.

Over time, routines often become more complicated — adding new products, trying different ingredients, and layering multiple steps.

The problem is, this can overwhelm the skin.

Certain products and ingredients don’t always complement each other. In some cases, they can cancel each other out — or even create a negative effect on the skin, leading to irritation, sensitivity, and more breakouts.

In many cases, simplifying your routine is one of the most effective things you can do.

 â€‹3    Understanding Your Skin Type

Understanding your skin type may seem obvious but it's not.

It’s very common to assume the skin is oily or dry based on surface symptoms, without really understanding what the skin actually needs.

What appears on the surface isn’t always what’s happening underneath.

For example, skin that feels oily can sometimes be dehydrated — and treating it as oily can make things worse.

Equally, using products designed for oily skin on dry or sensitive skin can lead to irritation and imbalance.

When products don’t match your skin type, they’re far less effective — and in some cases, can work against you.

Taking the time to understand your skin properly allows you to choose the right products and get much better results.

These are just a few of the fundamentals I focus on with my clients.

I’m sharing them here so you can take a simple first step towards healthier skin, these are key points where I always start.

These fundamentals underpin every treatment I offer.

Most clients I work with are dealing with the same simple issues — often without realising it.
