About Acne.

Acne is one of the most common inflammatory skin conditions, world-wide.  â€‹â€‹How long it lasts and how severe it becomes depends on how it is managed.  The good news?  Small, calm and consistent changes can make a real difference.

Who's Affected and Why?

Acne impacts teenagers and young adults the most, but not exlusively.  It is linked to changes in hormone levels during puberty, but can start at any age.  â€‹ Certain hormones cause the grease producing glands next to hair follicles in the skin to produce larger amounts of oil (abnormal sebum). Changes in the activity of bacterium (normally harmless) called P.acnes which in turn becomes more aggressive and causes inflammation and pus. Hormones also thicken the hair follicle inner lining which causes a blockage* of pores.

*Cleaning the skin does not help remove this blockage.

Acne is Common
But Often Misunderstood

Acne is often misunderstood and much of the advice available online oversimplifies it.  Breakouts you experience can be influenced by hormones, stress, skincare habits, and skin barrier health.  Unfortunately common "quick fixes" often increase irritation and prolong inflammation. My clients know that consistency leads to more effective long term results which in turn reduces the possibilities of facial scarring.  Quick fixes and aggressive one off treatments are not recommended.

Get The Small Things Right

Acne Scarring

Acne spots can lead to scarring.  This affects one in five people who have suffered with acne at some point in their life (acne support UK).  Scarring is not inevitable but has increased prevalence when more serious spots (cysts and nodules) burst and damage the nearby skin.

Treatments are available for acne scarring and these can be effective.  When treating acne it is imperative to look holistically at what is occurring as it is often not just any one thing in isolation causing breakouts.  Make sure to get the basics right and the treatment plan for your skin type is also taking in to account daily habits.
